Reflections on a law student’s first trial case

Jessica Puckett’s first case to try in court was the last case she wanted to tackle. It’s pretty common for Rule 9 interns (second-year law students like Jessica), to try DUI cases in district court in King County, but this particular case was not what Jessica had in mind for her very first trial.

“I looked at the seven cases I had and thought, ‘I hope this one does not go to trial.’ Of course, that’s the one case that was left standing!” Jessica said.

The case before Jessica was referred to as a “double refusal,” which means the defendant refused to do the field sobriety tests and the person declined a breath test when he was taken to a police station.
