FMD leads tabletop exercises to keep employees safe

The Facilities Management Division’s (FMD) Security Management Section (SMS) recently led two tabletop exercises at the King County Courthouse with participants from multiple county agencies, including the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the King County Council. The goal for these exercises was to equip participants with tools and knowledge to respond to a range of scenarios where an active aggressor or active shooter is present.

For the Active Aggressor exercise, SMS walked through potential scenarios, like a county council meeting turning rowdy, to allow council staff to think about when they should de-escalate the situation or evacuate if necessary. SMS was joined by the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO). Both groups helped talk participants through the resources that are available to county employees to ensure their safety at work.

For the Active Shooter exercise, SMS led a more tactical walkthrough, taking advantage of a nearly empty courthouse over the weekend. Participants also received useful information on using various first-aid kit tools, including Stop the Bleed kits, which can save lives in an active shooter scenario.

Both exercises were well-received by participants. Kudos to Dan Cromwell, SMS Manager, and Eric Pena, FMD Emergency Planner, for their effort in leading these exercises.
