This is the story of a female inmate who was incarcerated in our Seattle jail in March 2015. She had previously started community college at Seattle Central College (SCC) but dropped out of her classes because she became incarcerated. Dropping out left her with a bill of over $400 that prevented her from reenrolling until paid. Kudos! FMD gets kudos for installing new ballot boxes
Crossposted from DES Express King County Elections recently opened a number of new ballot drop boxes at locations all over King County, more than doubling the number of places where citizens can exercise their right to vote. This was a major undertaking, as many of those new boxes needed to be open in time for the August primary election. Shared from the DCHS Touching Base Newsletter Five weeks into operations, DCHS has made significant strides as it works to implement Coordinated Entry for All (CEA), a regional coordinated entry system to connect those experiencing homelessness to housing and services. CEA aims to reduce barriers to housing for those facing a housing crisis through a standardized assessment tool and coordinated referral and housing placement process. Inventing a better mousetrap: Innovative employees create custom salmon monitoring vessel
Finding new and better ways to recover threatened salmon species in King County is a top priority of the Water and Land Resources Division of the Department of Natural Resources and Parks. Chris Gregersen, an Environmental Scientist who works to monitor projects designed to improve fish habitat, has recently done just that while saving the county about $45,000. The Watershed and Ecological Assessment Team use an in-water, fish sampling technique called electrofishing. Executive Constantine signs legislation to invest $87 million in workforce housing around transit stations
With rents and housing prices out of reach throughout the region, King County Executive Dow Constantine today joined with County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove and housing advocates to sign legislation to invest up to $87 million for creation of more than 1,000 units of affordable workforce housing near new or existing transit stations. “Today, we celebrate landmark legislation to create vibrant, mixed-income neighborhoods with affordable housing near transit centers,” said Executive Constantine. “It’s an innovative approach to connect more communities across King County to jobs and opportunity.” Read more in the official press release.
King County sets national standard in supporting LGBT-owned businesses
Crossposted from King County DES Express King County will become a national leader in supporting LGBT-owned small businesses under an inclusive policy announced by Executive Dow Constantine. King County will become the largest county in the United States to track the number of contracts that are awarded to LGBT entrepreneurs, an approach that has dramatically increased the number and value of contracts awarded to local small businesses owned by women, people of color, and people who are disadvantaged during Executive Constantine’s administration.
