Changes for Deferred Compensation “catch-up” contributions for ages 50 and older

If you contribute to the King County Employees Deferred Compensation Plan, are over 50, and earned more than $150,000 in 2025, there are some changes that came into effect in 2026.

The pre-tax deferred compensation contributions for employees are capped as follows:

  • $24,500 per year if you are age 49 or younger.
  • $32,500 per year if you are age 50 to 59.
  • $35,750 per year if you are age 60 to 63.

Additional “catch-up” contributions to your plan above $24,500 (i.e. $8,000 for ages 50-59 or $11,250 for ages 60 to 63) are made as Roth contributions—meaning they are taken out of your pay post-tax.

No action is required, but any pre-tax catch-up contributions beyond the standard limit may automatically switch to Roth.
