Celebrating Pride and the fight for equality

A message from King County Executive Girmay Zahilay

Team,

Sunday, I joined hundreds of King County employees, families, friends, and even a few pets to march together in solidarity, unity, and celebration at the Seattle Pride Parade.

Pride celebrates a rich history of resistance, courage, and joy. It grew from the fight for basic rights and dignity, led by people, particularly Black Trans women, who refused to accept invisibility or inequality. Their activism laid the foundation for the freedoms and recognition the LGBTQIA+ community continues to pursue today. From the bold acts of protest at Stonewall to today’s ongoing work to advance equal rights and belonging, Pride honors the trailblazers who sparked change while celebrating the vibrant communities, cultures, and lives that continue to thrive because of their courage.

Sunday’s parade reflected that spirit. It was filled with joy, pride, love, and community, while serving as a powerful reminder that everyone deserves to live openly, safely, and authentically. That is what Pride celebrates, and it is what we must continue to protect.

By showing up in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, we send a clear message: your fight for freedom and equity is our fight. Your right to be seen, respected, and treated with dignity matters. Your belonging matters. Read more.
