Kudos! David Yoshizumi, Senior Animal Control Officer, Regional Animal Services of King County
Hello Tim and Gene,
We had a recent experience with one of your Field Agents who services Carnation, WA. I do not have his card in front of me, but I wanted to pass on my deep appreciation for the service he provided to us!!
Our situation was that an elderly neighbor had left their cat (healthy and older) with us when they sold their home and went to assisted living. The cat was an outdoor cat with a “friend” who hung around with him who was quite sickly. Like the neighbor couple, we felt sorry for the sickly guy and were feeding him, but it was quite evident that nobody was looking after him, so he was a stray.
This cat was bloated and sickly and moving along very slowly. He was most likely 10-15 years old, but we aren’t sure. We decided that we needed to call Animal Control because the animal appeared to be ailing and unable to continue to care for himself and we were concerned about his safety. We also didn’t know if he might get the other cat or other animals sick.
When your Carnation field agent arrived (a short, stout, extremely friendly gentleman), my 19-yr old daughter and I met him. It was then that my daughter realized that the cat would be evaluated and that there was a good chance he was too sick to adopt. She didn’t realize he might be put down. At that point, I left it up to her to decide if the animal should stay or go with the agent.
The field agent proceeded to tell us why he does the job: Because he LOVES animals. He let us know to take all the time we needed and that it really was our decision. He explained how the process worked and let my daughter evaluate her decision based on all the information. He let her know that, living on the fringe of a tree farm and out in the wooded areas (as we are) the chances of this vulnerable guy encountering a coyote or cougar was pretty likely. Bottom line is that this agent really took the time to show his love for animals and express empathy for the decision that was in front of us.
About a week ago, I received an envelope in the mail with the agent’s card and some printed information about feline FIV. There was a Post-it note attached that said, “Lisa, this is what the cat had.” The agent had taken the time to follow-up and let us know that we had – essentially – done the right thing! He made sure we knew that the cat was very sick and that we knew what the health issues were to help us have some closure. He had gone ABOVE AND BEYOND all expectations. What a great employee you have!!
Can you please make sure you let him know how much we appreciate his caring and handling of his work! We are sincerely grateful for his employment with RASKC! Also – I have his business card at home – but can you please confirm the agent’s name, so I know this gets to the right person?
Thank you,
Lisa Hurley
