Time is running out for Holiday Food Drive

Falling leaves and falling temperatures mean the giving season will soon be here. However, for many families in King County, this time of year is difficult. They struggle to make ends meet, especially as the weather turns colder and heating bills rise. For many years now, King County employees have demonstrated their generosity and giving spirit by donating canned and pre-packaged food to our Holiday Food Drive. If you’re eligible for benefits with the County, you should have received important information about this year’s benefits open enrollment, which will run Nov. 1 – Nov. 15. 2015 benefit highlights Regence BlueShield is issuing new KingCareSMmedical cards for next year. SmartCare Connect (Group Health) has added a cardiac rehabilitation program. You can enroll in a health care flexible spending account with debit card reimbursement. The King County Employee Giving Program (EGP) hosted five Nonprofit Expos in September and October to help employees get a better understanding of how their contributions to the Annual Giving Drive have a real impact on the lives of people and animals, on the arts, and on the environment, both here and abroad. Nonprofits help to launch Employee Giving Program’s Ambassador Rally

The Seattle nonprofit, Teen Feed, provides meals for homeless youth in the University District 365 days a year, something it is able to do with help from  King County’s Employee Giving Program. “You are helping provide [homeless teens] what they need 24 hours a day,” Suzanee Sullivan the Development and Communications Director said at the EGP Ambassador Rally. Parks upcycles cargo container for use by campers

In Tolt-MacDonald Park, near Carnation, campers now have the option of camping in a cargo box. “I loved pulling materials out of the scrap bin to make something people would enjoy,” Jason Anglin, a carpenter with King County Parks, said. “It felt good to be this creative.” This upcycled cargo container boasts radiant heat, LED lighting, a table and bench set, food storage, a futon bunk, and an outdoor fire pit.
