KCIT deploying new tool to protect data and systems

KCIT will deploy a new security tool later this month that will help protect the entire King County network from cybersecurity attacks. The new tool will operate behind the scenes, helping to protect all of our data and systems from both external and internal cyber threats. This deployment should affect neither your computer nor your day-to-day business operations. If you are blocked from a work-approved website or application, either submit a Help Desk Ticket to HelpTicket@KingCounty.gov or escalate the issue through your technical support group.

Tech Tip: Basic intro to OneDrive and cloud storage access

ICYMI: Here’s a great basic introduction to OneDrive! Everyone talks about “The Cloud” – where internet users can store files and access them from anywhere. Did you know King County employees have the exact same application available to them through Office 365? It’s easy to navigate and use. OneDrive is a great tool for uploading files to share with others (including photos), give others permission to edit and work on files at the same time, and get to your files from anywhere, on your computer, tablet or phone. Essentially, it’s an online locker… Read More

Tech Tip: Don’t shut down, restart!

ICYMI: We ran a great tip last fall on the importance of restarting your computer rather than just shutting it down. KCIT maintains our computer systems around the clock, even while most of us are sleeping. But, your computer must be on. This is especially important when security patches are being deployed. So, if you leave your computer in your work area when you depart for the day, hit “Restart” instead of “Turn Off” when you go home. Doing so cleans up your computer and allows KCIT to roll out the necessary… Read More

Tech Tip: Updating King County-issued and personal devices

In case you missed it: Whether it’s on your county-issued mobile device or your own personal device, KCIT strongly recommends that you update the Operating System when your provider releases OS updates. These updates keep your device free of viruses, make it difficult for hackers to gain access to your information and help your existing apps work better. KCIT is rolling out Exchange Online throughout the county. This allows employees to access King County email anytime, anywhere and from any device if that device has the most updated software. For our security… Read More

Tech Tip: Username format for new employees

King County changed the username format for new employees in March 2017 to a single, universal sign on. The new format is simpler to remember, easier to automate for new account creation, and it increases the county’s ability to protect against phishing, scams and other cyber threats. What is the new username?  For PCs or email, it is the first letter of first name plus the last name. For example, Juan Hernandez would be JHernandez to sign into a PC, laptop, all work stations, and – eventually – PeopleSoft. Juan’s email address… Read More

Tech Tip: KCIT adds more security to email

King County is actively working to improve email security to decrease the number of incidents and comprised accounts related to phishing. As part of this proactive approach, two new security features were implemented Monday that add another layer of protection to our email security. The new features are: URL Protection: The URL protection protects us by checking to see if a URL in the email is safe. When you click on the URL, it will be checked to ensure the URL is safe before opening the website. If the link is not… Read More

Tech Tip: A change in your laptop docking system

New laptops that KCIT distributes are getting smaller, slimmer, and more lightweight. Over the past two years the docking stations have been changing from the old slide-in-and-clamp style. The new USB-C docks use one cable to connect to the side of your laptop. The single cable connection plugs into the side of the laptop and can transmit high speed network data, connect your monitors and peripherals, and provide power to charge your laptop. This is now the laptop docking standard and comes with all new laptops.
